Punta Gorda has a quaint U.S. registered "historic district"; technically Punta Gorda National Register District. This is a charming area with street lights and paved streets, filled with friendly people who enjoy their outdoor lifestyle.
The northern boundary is Gilchrist Park directly on the Peace River. It stretches west from the traditional commercial core and is comprised of mostly wood framed residential structures with histories from 1884 to 1930. There are varieties of homes ranging from small bungalows to large Queen Anne style. This quaint area has some adorable houses, many with wrap around porches. The Punta Gorda Historical Society has been preserving historic buildings for over 20 years to maintain the character of the area. This is a desirable area within walking distance to the Peace River Bridge, the downtown district, the Pathways bike trails, Gilchrest Park, Fishermen's Village, and the Visual Arts Center. The library and History Park are at the western edge of the district.
There is a great deal of building going on. The new homes are stucco block, but mainly in the Key West Style. This is where children from all over the area come to Trick or Treat, and the Christmas Decorations can be breathtaking.
